MANILA, Philippines —Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will distribute P1 billion worth of Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) assistance to families affected by Typhoon Egay. The distribution will begin on Thursday. This announcement was released by the department on the same day. According to DSWD, over 178,000 beneficiaries will benefit from the aid. The recipients are in Cordillera Administrative Region, Mimaropa, and Regions I (Ilocos), II (Cagayan Valley), and III (Central Luzon). The program will go on until November. “The ECT program minimizes security risks for personnel and logistical demands since it utilizes financial service providers for the conduct of digital payouts,” DSWD Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications Romel Lopez said. ECT is under DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program. It will be facilitated by Special Disbursing Officers of DSWD Field Offices in the areas that are covered by the initiative. According to local authorities’ reports, five people were killed, while more than 328,000 were affected by Typhoon Egay that hit the country in July. It also caused more than P7 billion worth of damage to infrastructure.
