MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government on Thursday condemned the hazing that allegedly killed a criminology student on October 16. In a statement, the city government asked the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) to hold the suspects involved accountable. “Once again, this incident demonstrates that hazing is a life-threatening practice that violates the principles of human dignity,” it said. “Physical harm and violence through hazing and other initiation rites should be abhorred and condemned in accordance with RA 11054 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018,” it noted. “Hindi dapat maging batayan ng katapatan at kapatiran ang pananakit sa kapwa na maaaring magdulot ng permanenteng pinsala o humantong sa kamatayan,” it added. (Loyalty and brotherhood should not be based on harming others that can cause permanent damage or lead to death.) The victim, 25-year-old Ahldryn Leary Bravante, was a fourth-year criminology student at the Philippine College of Criminology (PCCr) in Manila. Police said the crime occurred in an abandoned building at the corner of Santo Domingo Avenue and Calamba Street, Quezon City, around 2 p.m. on Monday. Following the alleged hazing, the student struggled to breathe and lost consciousness. He was then brought to the Chinese General Hospital in Manila around 6:40 p.m., where he was declared dead on arrival. So far, four suspects are already under police custody.
