Job security of court stenographers assured
Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on Monday assured court stenographers that the judiciary’s adaption to new technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled platforms, would not cost them their jobs. “We assure you we will train our people and we will retool their skills. That’s our commitment. [Voice to text transcription systems] will not eliminate the job of stenographers but will make them more efficient and reliable,” said Gesmundo during the high court’s meeting with its development partners and stakeholders on Monday. According to him, the high court is considering the procurement of the equipment for the purpose of using voice to text transcription. “We have an existing program already … but the problem is that the machine cannot recognize our words because of the accent and the dialects we are using. But in due time, the machine will be taught to understand whatever dialect or accent we use in court proceedings,” Gesmundo said. “ —TINA G. SANTOS
