Motorcyclist, pedestrian dead in Quezon mishaps


LUCENA CITY — A pedestrian and a motorcyclist died in separate road accidents in Quezon province on Saturday and Sunday, police said. Motorcycle rider Rico Abrigo, 37, was negotiating a curved section of the road in Barangay (village) San Jose in General Luna town around 12:15 a.m. Sunday, October 15, when he lost control of the vehicle, the Quezon police said in a report. The wayward motorcycle consequently crashed into the steel railing on the roadside and thrown off the rider. Abrigo, a farmer, suffered fatal injuries and was taken to a rural health center in the town center but was declared dead on arrival. The report indicated that the fatality was not wearing a crash helmet for protection which is required by the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009. READ: Two dead, one hurt in truck-van collision in Quezon In neighboring Gumaca town, Francis Sunga, 26, was crossing the Maharlika Highway in Barangay San Vicente around 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, when he was bumped by a speeding Isuzu closed van driven by one alias “Jessie.” The victim, a bank teller, suffered grave injuries and died on the way to the hospital.
